  • The Editor

To help you stay focused on writing instead of formatting, Highland keeps the writing (Editor) and formatted presentation (Preview) of your document separate. To see what your document looks like fully formatted, click the document icon  in the toolbar or press ⌘ Command + E.
  • Live Margins

Live Margins let you see the shape of your script right in the Editor without getting lost in formatting. Highland will automatically indent dialogue and character cues. Turn it on by pressing Command + L or by selecting Live Margins from the View menu.
  • Themes

Select the Themes icon from the top right of the Highland window to open the themes menu. Themes change the look and feel of the Editor to match your mood. Highland Basic has two themes unlocked (Classic and Dark Mode). Highland Pro unlocks 8 additional themes.

For a minimal writing environment, you can hide the Editor Tool Bar (View > Auto-Hide Toolbar or press Command + T). The tool bar will reappear when you move the mouse to the top of the window. Pro tip: For a completely distraction-free environment, hide the sidebar as well. Choose View >...
  • Typewriter Scrolling

Some people love it, some people don’t. For those that do, Highland will keep your latest line centered vertically in the Editor. Select Typewriter Scrolling from the View menu to give it a try. You might just love it.
  • Show Page Breaks

Highland will display a distraction-free indication in the Editor of where page breaks will fall in your PDF or print. Turn them on by selecting Show Page Breaks from the View menu.
  • Show Paragraph Numbers

Highland will track paragraph numbers and display them along the left edge of the Editor. Select Show Paragraph Numbers from the View Menu. • Show Invisibles

Turn on Invisibles (View > Show Invisibles or Shift + Command + I) for visual indications of spaces, tabs, and carriage returns. These formatting markers will not be visible in your PDF or when printed.
  • Include files

The {{INCLUDE: (*file path*) }} command will place the specified file in to your document when assembling the PDF. Highland treats the included file as if it was written within the master document. Easily keep chapters or scenes in separate files or quickly reorganize a long document. If your fi...

  • Series

{{SERIES}} inserts auto-incrementing numbers. This is really helpful for book chapters. Headers can be written as: # -- {{SERIES}} -- # The Pack and have it automatically generate the chapter numbers. You can use {{SERIES}} for anything. For comic books, it’s a useful way to number panels.
  • Timestamp

{{TIMESTAMP}} inserts the date a document is previewed or printed (including in Fountain title pages). You can customize the formatting.
